Man barricades himself inside trailer at campground, threatens others with guns and dog

An Ontario man is facing multiple charges after making threats and barricading himself inside a trailer at a campground in Melbourne.

On August 14, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Yarmouth Rural and Yarmouth Town RCMP responded to a report that a man was threatening individuals at a campground on Comeaus Hill Rd.

Officers learned that the man was telling fellow campers he had firearms and was threatening to release his dog to attack bystanders.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed firearms inside the man’s trailer. The man then barricaded himself inside.

As a precaution, RCMP officers worked with campground security to evacuate people from the immediate area.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., the man exited the trailer and was safely arrested. Officers subsequently seized three loaded shotguns and one loaded rifle.

Cody Wayne Gauthier, 38, of Brampton, Ontario, has been charged with:

  • Assault
  • Uttering Threats
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Careless Use of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Restricted Firearm/Prohibited Weapon with Ammunition
  • Unsafe Storage of Firearms

Gauthier was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on August 17.

The investigation is ongoing.
