RCMP release:
RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment has charged a man and a youth after locating a stolen vehicle, recovering stolen property, and arresting the occupants following a dangerous driving incident.
On September 4, at approximately 6:45 p.m., RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically and entering oncoming traffic in the 10500 block of Hwy. 7 in Oyster Pond. Officers learned that a Mazda sedan bearing a New Brunswick licence plate, occupied by two people, had last been seen travelling westbound.
An officer observed the Mazda passing Hwy. 357 and attempted to stop the vehicle in the 7800 block of Hwy. 7 in Musquodoboit Harbour. The Mazda failed to stop and continued westbound at a high rate of speed.
At approximately 7:15 p.m., officers received a second call regarding the same vehicle driving all over the road and into oncoming traffic on Hwy. 107 in Mineville. An officer observed the vehicle perform a U-turn on Hwy. 107 and head east.
A tire deflation device was successfully deployed as the Mazda travelled east on Hwy. 107 towards Porters Lake. The Mazda was followed and came to a stop at a residence in the 300 block of West Porters Lake Rd. The driver fled on foot but was quickly arrested by responding officers. The passenger was not immediately located.
Officers determined that the Mazda had been stolen in Moncton, New Brunswick, on September 3, and was displaying a stolen licence plate.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a suspicious person in the area of where the vehicle was recovered. Responding officers located a youth matching the description of the passenger from the stolen vehicle, and they were arrested.
The driver, Dawson Thomas, 18, of Richibucto Village, New Brunswick, is charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
- Flight from Police
- Obstruction
- Failing to Comply with a Release Order (three counts)
- Failing to Comply with a Probation Order
The passenger, a youth from Moncton, has been charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Resisting Arrest
- Failing to Comply with Condition of Release Order (two counts)
- Failing to Comply with Condition of Undertaking
Both were held in custody and appeared in Halifax Provincial Court on September 8. Thomas remains in custody and is scheduled to appear on September 10. The youth has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on October 2.
