If you’ve been waiting on Nova Scotia’s list for a family doctor and found out your request was cancelled, you don’t have to wait quietly. You can check where you stand and get back on the list in a few minutes.
The list is shrinking, but not only because people found doctors
As of September 1, 52,771 Nova Scotians were on the Need a Family Practice Registry, or 4.8 per cent of the population. That’s down 1,811 in August alone. On January 1 it was 66,768, so the list is almost 14,000 names shorter than at the start of the year.
Nova Scotia Health says the monthly number reflects new registrations, people connected to a family doctor or nurse practitioner, “and other updates to registration status over time.” Some people leave the list because they got a provider. Others are removed for other reasons.
Why you might be taken off
Nova Scotia Health now checks in with people on the list regularly to confirm they still need a doctor or nurse practitioner. A clean-up of the whole registry began in June 2024 and finished early this year. The province says checking in is now an ongoing part of being registered.
If you’ve been matched with a provider but haven’t had your first appointment, the registry calls you “pended.” That’s different from being removed.
Watch for the call
When Nova Scotia Health started these check-in calls in 2024, it said the calls may come from a number you don’t recognize or a blocked caller ID. Staff only ask for the last four digits of your health card and your birth date, then confirm your address, email and phone number. Keep those up to date so they can reach you.

Everyone on the registry has free access to VirtualCareNS, and there are also pharmacy clinics, mobile clinics and urgent treatment centres. Nova Scotia Health has a short questionnaire that points you to care options near you.
