Ahoy, matey! Tickets are now on sale for Pirate Invasion: A Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day Event, a fundraiser for local charity Feed the Mind. Your little pirate can Walk-the-Plank, go on a treasure hunt, get their face painted, win a prize for best costume, and join in the other pirate fun and activities. Carrie Muller and Jacqueline Halsey, authors of The Terrible Horrible Smelly Pirate (one of our favourite books!), will also be there.
The fundraiser takes place at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on September 19 from 6-8pm. Tickets: $10 per person or $25 per family, available by contacting Feed the Mind (455-4286) or debcameron@eastlink.ca. This event is open to all ages, but of particular interest to kids aged 4-6 years old.
(While writing this post I finally clued into the fact that September 19 is actually International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Who knew?! There's even a website for it here with lots of information on pirate name generators, translation, games, songs and lots more. Apparently my pirate name is 'Dirty Charity Rackham'!)

"Books are food for the mind"
Every child needs food.
Every child needs books.
Feed the Mind is a Halifax-based, non-profit organization that provides free books for children who might not otherwise have their own. This volunteer association collects donations of new or gently used children's books, then makes them available, free of charge, at family resource centres in Halifax and Dartmouth, at the Spryfield Single Parent Centre, and at the Wolfville Area Food Bank. Children are encouraged to peruse the books and select one to take home on each and every visit to one of the centres. Feed the Mind has donated over 6,000 books since their beginning in June, 2007.
This project honours the memory of Alan E. Cameron, who – during his extensive career – made outstanding contributions to the book publishing industry in Canada. Cameron was deeply committed to literacy; his wife Debbie, who also works in the book publishing industry, shares her late husband's passion for books and literacy, so founded Feed the Mind after hearing about a similar organization in British Columbia.
