The province is partnering with Nova Scotia Student Unions to better protect university students from sexual assault and the consequences of overdrinking on campus.
Student leaders from across the province are coming together to review student union policies and practices for alcohol and sexual assault prevention.
The goal is to find out what is working and what can be done to better keep students safe on campus.
“Fall is an exciting time of year for university students, unfortunately it can also be a dangerous time,” said Frank Corbett, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. “There are lots of parties and activities, and the temptation can be to drink too much. This can put kids in a tough spot.
“This is why we are working with young people on campuses to increase prevention and raise awareness.”
The students will also use the review to develop a communications campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault, how to prevent it from happening and what to do if someone witnesses an assault.
“We’re very excited to pursue these important initiatives to improve our practices and protect our students,” said StudentsNS chair Jared Perry. “Together, students and the province are working to turn the tide on sexual assault and alcohol abuse among students.”
Student Unions at Acadia, Mount Saint Vincent, St. FX and Cape Breton University are all taking part. Saint Mary’s University and Dalhousie Agriculture’s Students’ Association are also involved. Dalhousie Student Union will participate in the communications campaign.
Almost $47,000 will be spent on the initiatives. The province is investing more than $31,000, with $13,000 from student unions, and $1,400 from Cape Breton University.
