Premier Stephen McNeil announced today, Oct. 23, his nominee for Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly.

Kevin Murphy, MLA for Eastern Shore, will be nominated by the premier and asked to serve as Speaker of the House at a special meeting of the Assembly Thursday, Oct.

Before being elected to the legislature, Mr. Murphy was a business owner and operator for three decades on the Eastern Shore. Kevin has also been active in his community through extensive volunteerism.

“Kevin will serve the House of Assembly and its members with distinction and honour,” said Premier McNeil. “He is a balanced, conciliatory and collegial individual who will make certain our assembly is governed with civility and respect.”

Mr. Murphy said it is a priority to ensure the members of the assembly conduct themselves with dignity and decorum during proceedings of the House.

“I am humbled and honoured to be asked to serve as Speaker,” said Mr. Murphy. “I will strive to ensure the House of Assembly functions in a manner that reflects the expectations of Nova Scotians and the tradition of the legislature.”

Premier McNeil will also nominate Margaret Miller, MLA for Hants East, to be Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly during the special sitting of the assembly.

Ms. Miller was a business owner and national president of MADD Canada before being elected to the legislature.
