The Department of Environment has changed its regulations to add carbon capture and storage to the list of activities that need an industrial approval.
Carbon Capture and Storage Nova Scotia has said it will pursue research in this new technology in the Sydney area.
Carbon capture stores waste carbon dioxide from large emitters, such as fossil fuel-burning industries, underground so it does not enter the atmosphere.
“Carbon capture and storage is a relatively new technology that is being researched and explored around the world,” said Environment Minister Randy Delorey. “By acting now, we are ensuring this practice is regulated before any activity is undertaken in Nova Scotia.”
Mr. Delorey emphasized regulating carbon capture and storage is not an endorsement of it. It is to ensure any research work is done with appropriate measures to protect the environment.
Any company proposing carbon capture and storage activity in Nova Scotia will need an approval from the Environment Department before work can begin
