Approval Issued to East Chester Quarry

The Department of Environment has issued an operating approval to Northern Construction for a quarry near East Chester.

The quarry will supply materials needed for work on Highway 103.

The approval was issued after public consultation by the company.

After a request by the department, the company held another public consultation session Oct. 16. All comments by residents were considered.

Environmental approvals have terms and conditions that address dust, noise, protecting water resources and remediating the site when the quarry closes. The quarry must also follow the pit and quarry guidelines.

Department staff will monitor the operation to ensure it complies with the terms and conditions.

More information on the guidelines is available at https://novascotia.ca/nse/dept/docs.policy/Guidelines-Pit-and-Quarry.pdf.
