On the first weekend of August 2009, the Surfers Association of Nova Scotia (SANS) will be hosting its first annual “Back To The Beach Community Surfing Contest” on “The Reef” at Lawrencetown Beach.

Designed to be a fun community-based event, the contest will host two divisions – team and individual – and will be focused on fun and family. There will be an early BBQ, awards ceremony and small concert after the event at a family-friendly location (to be determined).

Date: August 1st or 2nd, 2009. As with most contests here in the land of inconsistent swell and weather, we will be making the call on which day to hold the event on the Wednesday before the weekend to ensure good conditions.

Time: Registration at 8:30 a.m. First heat in the water at 10 a.m. BBQ and concert at 6:30 p.m.

Registration: $10 per individual. Maximum of 10 teams for the team event and 32 competitors for the individual competition. Places are to be allotted on a first-come, first-in basis by email to contest@surfns.com. Fees are due the morning of the event.

Divisions:

Team – Teams of three will compete with two teams in the water at a time for 30 minutes. Every member of the team has to catch at least one wave (being pushed into a wave counts) and will be judged on costume, antics, style and skill by the other teams who are not in the water. Open to all ages and genders. All board types are welcome and props are strongly encouraged.

Individual – Individuals will compete in four-person, 20-minute heats on “weird” boards selected by drawing numbers out of a hat. We will have a collection of twins, funboards, retro boards, single fins, longboards, paddleboards and quads, but competitors are strongly encouraged to bring their own funky shapes to add to the mix. Contestants will be judged on antics (which can include costumes), style and skill. Open to all genders and age groups.
