Bluenose II to Get Test Drive

Bluenose II will go for a test drive to check a number of systems before its sea trials.

“There is concern about the performance of the vessel’s steering system, and we need to get these issues resolved,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince.

“Although we’ve been advised the system should meet regulatory requirements, we need to be satisfied with it.

“After consulting with the builders, project managers and designers, we have decided we need to take Bluenose II on a test drive before sea trials.”

The test drive in Lunenburg harbour will assess how the steering gear and other ship systems perform when the ship is in motion. It will also help determine if it is ready for sea trials, the final phase of the project.

“While this project is already late, we’re not willing to compromise on safety and quality,” said Mr. Ince. “Once the tests are finished, we’ll move ahead and address any issues that are identified.”

The test drive is weather dependent, but will likely take place in the next few weeks. The province will provide an update after the test.
