There is nothing more exciting, for someone in my position, then when you hear of a new burger that has come to a local restaurant. A new burger can end up being a hit or miss, but either way, it’s still another chance to sink my teeth into a potential new favourite.
While doing some burger research (we all have our hobbies) I came across a new burger on the menu at Darrell’s Restaurant. Located at 5576 Fenwick Street, this was my second visit to Darrell’s since starting this blog (my first was actually for the premier burger for LoB). Having heard nothing about this new creation, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to get my hands on the Piggy-Back Burger.

One of the first things you notice about this burger is how juicy it looks. Between the melted cheese, pulled pork, and the actual patty itself, just the look of this burger is enough to make your mouth water. With that being said, I was somewhat worried that there may be too much going on with this burger, almost to a point where it looked kind of messy, and that it may be a little overwhelming.
After a few bites, I was able to start forming a list of pros and cons in my head. On the pro side, I really liked the use of the coleslaw in lieu of typical burger vegetables as it had a nice, crunchy aspect, as well as just being pretty tasty. I also really liked the jalapeño havarti because it gave a nice, subtle kick to the burger. In terms of cons, I really felt as though the pita chip was completely unnecessary. There was no noticeable flavour to it, and it got soggy pretty quickly so it didn’t even add any kind of crunch. As I predicted before, this burger was a little too busy. There was so much going on in terms of toppings, that it was hard to even get a good taste of the patty, which, in my opinion, should be the star of the show. As a side note, it should also be mentioned that this burger got pretty messy, which seems to be the theme for most Darrell’s burgers. This isn’t necessarily a good or bad thing, I just want to give you a bit of warning in case you decide to give this one a try yourself.
Restaurant Atmosphere & Service (8.5/10)
As with my previous visits to Darrell’s, the staff was very friendly and welcoming. It was slightly busy during this visit, but none of the staff seemed stressed, and I would even go as far as saying that they all enjoy working here. I have never had a major issue with the employees here, and kudos to Darrell’s for that!
Cost vs. What You Get (5.75/10)
For this new creation, it will cost you $13.69. Falling in the average (maybe slightly higher) price range, the cost of this burger is kind of tricky to evaluate. If you are looking at just the quantity of what you get, this price would seem fair. However, having a bunch of stuff on your burger doesn’t necessarily make it worth much in terms of quality. I honestly don’t think that I would pay this again for this burger as it didn’t really ‘wow’ me.
I’m not saying that this burger was horrible. It definitely filled me up, and it wasn’t the worst thing I have put in my mouth. I just don’t think there was really that much that made it stand out to me. Darrell’s does make some great stuff, and props to them for trying out new menu items, but in my opinion, this burger just slightly missed the mark.
