Burger #45 – Burger Platter (Maxwell’s Plum)

When a place proclaims that one of their menu items is “the best in town”, you expect a pretty tasty time. Maxwell’s Plum, located at 1600 Grafton Street, has a huge selection of beer to choose from, and they just so happen to claim that they have the best burger platter in town. Obviously, I had to go and check out this burger platter for myself.

Stats

From the menu: “Maxwell’s 1/2 pound signature burger patty. Served on a sesame seed bun with romaine lettuce, red onion and a thick slice of ripe tomato” – I also added bacon and cheese to mine.

Appearance (6/10)

The look of this burger was pretty much what I was expecting, given the price. I’m glad I opted to add the bacon and cheese to my burger because it would have looked pretty plain otherwise. I did like the misshapen form of the burger, as that always makes it feel a little more ‘homemade’.

I was kind of surprised to see the diced onions on the burger. I’m not sure if it’s a texture thing or a composition thing, or a bit of both, but diced onions are not something I want on my burger.

Taste (5/10)

The first thing I noticed about this burger was the patty. I wasn’t a fan of how well-done it was, which in turn made it lacking in the juiciness department. The meat itself also wasn’t spectacular but it wasn’t horrible either. The bun was sadly toasted too long and it made it more crunchy than soft.

In my eyes, the best part of this burger was the cheese and bacon add-ons. They gave this somewhat bland burger the bit of flavouring it needed in order for me to want to keep eating it.

Cost vs. What You Get (7.5/10)

The redeeming factor of this burger is definitely the cost. At only $7.99, this burger platter is a bargain hunter’s dream. While the quality isn’t exactly the best in the city, this burger is a pretty cheap, and filling, option. A lot of bars and clubs in the city charge more than this for cover, so if you look at it that way, it’s a pretty good deal.

Overall (6.17/10)

If you’re only looking at the price tag, this burger probably would be the best burger platter in the city. However, when it comes to quality, I would have to disagree with that title. In a city that’s filled with broke university students, who also love beer, this is a great option for them. I will definitely continue to go to Maxwell’s, but I’ll probably just stick to the beer.
