A ban on campfires at all provincial parks and private campgrounds will be in effect today, June 24, until Monday, June 27, due to high risk of wildfires over the weekend.

“The Fort McMurray fires in Alberta and the recent fire at Bayers Lake in Halifax show the need for an even greater level of caution when the wildfire risk is high,” said Minister of Natural Resources Lloyd Hines. “To ensure the safety of people, properties, wildlife, and forests, I am issuing a proclamation today that campfires in parks are not permitted this weekend.”

The ministerial proclamation will be in effect from 2 p.m. today, June 24, until 2 p.m. Monday, June 27.

This change will further reduce wildfire risks in the province and is in addition to other risk reductions that campfires in provincial parks are already subjected to.

Wildfire risk season is March 15 to Oct. 15.
