Centennial Pool re-opens after extensive renovations

Tuesday, Jan.

28, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Extensive renovations are almost complete for one of Halifax’s landmark recreational facilities, Centennial Pool.

The 46-year-old pool will re-open to the public tomorrow (Wednesday Jan. 29), after undergoing a major facelift to its change rooms and front desk foyer area. The total cost for these renovations will be in excess of $1-million.

This marks the conclusion of a three-phase project that is expected to extend the life of the pool by another 20 years.

The first phase updated the heating system, including the installation of state-of-the-art solar panels. The second phase overhauled the mechanical infrastructure of the swimming pool. The most recent phase concluding this month will improve on the overall look and functionality of the facility.

Swimmers will notice a brighter look to the pool as well as user-friendly upgrades such as in-floor heating in the change rooms, modern fixtures, as well as change rooms that are now fully accessible.

In May 1968, Centennial Pool was constructed by the former City of Halifax in co-operation with the Province of Nova Scotia and the Federal Government through its Centennial grants.

This facility was the site of the first Canadian Summer Games in 1969.
