Mediator Appointed in Chignecto School Board Negotiations

Labour and Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan, at the request of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey, appointed veteran mediator Bruce Outhouse today, Jan. 28, to help in contract negotiations between Chignecto Central Regional School Board and Local 3890 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

The union has agreed to go back to work while mediation is underway, effective tomorrow, Jan. 29. Some staff, including mechanics and bus drivers, will report to work later today.

Bus service will resume tomorrow morning to limit further disruption for students in the region.

“A mediator will provide support to the parties, and bring fresh perspective to the negotiations,” said Ms. Regan. “Mr. Outhouse has extensive experience dealing with these types of disputes at both the regional and national levels, and I’m pleased he’s able to help the parties.”

Mr. Outhouse is an experienced mediator, arbitrator and lawyer who has successfully mediated many negotiations.
