Cole Harbour Place closed as of 12 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 22 for continued roof assessment

Saturday, Mar. 21, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that Cole Harbour Place will be closed as of 12 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 22 to accommodate an ongoing assessment of snow load on the roof of the building. It is anticipated that the assessment will be complete by early afternoon, at which time we will advise through a separate PSA as to the status of Cole Harbour Place operations for the remainder of the day.

The building is being closed as a precaution due to forecasted rainfall of 20-30 mm over the next eight to 10 hours, which could increase the load on the roof beyond acceptable levels when combined with existing frozen snow on the roof. Building maintenance staff and Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency personnel worked earlier today to remove snow from the roof, however a significant amount of frozen snow and ice remains.

A structural assessment of the building will be undertaken following the end of the rain event tomorrow to determine if the building is safe to re-open for operation, as per standard procedures.

Municipal recreation staff are working to find alternate arrangements for a hockey tournament scheduled to take place at Cole Harbour Place on Sunday.

The municipality apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause, however the safety of residents and employees is our top priority.
