Government Gets Ownership Porters Lake Canal

The Department of Natural Resources has signed an agreement with the Government of Canada to get ownership of the Porters Lake Canal. The Government of Canada will transfer the land at no cost.

The agreement was announced today, March 31, by Kevin Murphy, MLA for Eastern Shore, on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill.

“This is a beautiful area of the province and I’m so pleased that the people of Nova Scotia will own this land. The area will remain available for outdoor enthusiasts to engage in activities like hiking and boating.”

The canal consists of 2.88 hectares and runs between Porters Lake and Three Fathom Harbour. It offers boating enthusiasts a link between Porters Lake and the Atlantic Ocean. A hiking trail that runs along the edge of the canal intersects with an abandoned railbed.

Over the next few months, the Department of Natural Resources hopes to work with local community organizations to help manage the canal.
