Nova Scotia senior support groups can now apply for grants to help seniors stay safe and live independently.

The Senior Safety Grant program is funded by the departments of Seniors and Justice. It provides up to $20,000 to non-profit, community-based safety programs that provide information, support, and guidance to seniors.

Programs that promote education and awareness of senior abuse, including financial, emotional and physical, crime prevention, safety, and health are eligible. Programs must show financial or in-kind community support, and emphasize better communication between seniors and the police.

New and existing seniors’ safety program groups are encouraged to apply. The deadline is Oct. 31.

Application forms are available at http://novascotia.ca/seniors/senior_Safety_Grant.asp or by calling, toll-free, 1-800-670-0065 or, in Halifax Regional Municipality, 902-424-0065.
