Halifax bridge tolls to be removed April 1

The Nova Scotia government is eliminating tolls on the A. Murray MacKay and Angus L. Macdonald bridges as part of its 2025 budget. The change, set to take effect on April 1, follows Premier Tim Houston’s campaign promise during last December’s election.

Currently, bridge tolls range from $1 to $1.25 per crossing, generating about $40 million annually. The province argues that removing them will ease traffic congestion and save drivers time.

With the elimination of tolls, Halifax Harbour Bridges will no longer be classified as a Government Business Enterprise, leading to a one-time $300 million increase in provincial net debt. The province’s overall debt is projected to rise by $2.7 billion in 2025–26.

Approximately 110,000 vehicles cross the bridges daily.
