Halifax Burger Week 2016 Preview – Part 2

Burger Week is now only 5 days away, and I can almost taste all the delicious burgers (maybe because I actually have tasted some of them already). I know you are all eager to get out there and get eating, so I’m here with Part 2 of the Halifax Burger Week Preview Series (you can see Part 1 here) to get your mouths watering and your stomachs growling with some tasty burger details! In this part, I highlight three more burgers from Ardmore Tea Room, Primal Kitchen, and Fickle Frog!

Burger: Doughnut Burger – Maple sausage patty, fried egg, American cheese, tomato, spicy mayo and doughnut bun

Price: $6

Last year, Ardmore offered up a burger for Burger Week that used two waffles instead of a traditional bun. This was the very last stop for Team LOB and myself, and with maple syrup drizzled over the burger, it made for a nice little dessert to cap off the week. This year, they have created the Doughnut Burger, and instead of finishing off your day, you’re going to want to start your day with this one!

Resembling a traditional breakfast sandwich, the Doughnut Burger is on the lighter side, and it’s the perfect start to a day full of burger-ing. I was somewhat unsure about how well the doughnut would work, but I actually enjoyed the sweet taste that it provided. There are two maple sausage patties inside this creation, and they’re smothered in a thick slice of American cheese. The fried egg rounds out this burger, and it really comes together as a breakfast meal packed inside of a doughnut! Start your day right and head to Ardmore for this sweet Burger Week treat!

Burger: Chicken molé burger with fire-roasted corn, red cabbage slaw and tequila aioli

Price: $15 with $2 going to Feed Nova Scotia

My first experience with chicken molé was at Fiasco (the former name of Primal) during last year’s Burger Week. I remember reading about it and not being sure what to expect from it. Even when it was placed in front of me, the dark colour of the coating was somewhat intimidating, but once I took a bite, I instantly fell in love with this unique dish.

This year they have brought back an enhanced version of their chicken molé burger, and it is just as good as I remember. The molé coating not only gives the chicken a great texture, it also has a nice full flavour, with a bit of a kick. The fire-roasted corn and red cabbage slaw brought a nice freshness to the burger, and the mixture gave a bit of a sweet flavour, as well as provided a mellow heat to the overall composition. This burger is also really visually appealing with the bright colours standing out on top of the dark coloured chicken. With so many burgers being a variation on a similar theme, this burger shines through, and it is not to be missed this Burger Week!

Burger: The Motherfunghi – Homemade burger patty on our specialty buns with bacon, mozza, arugula, an array of mushrooms and a Fickle-icious secret sauce

Price: $6

Fickle Frog was my last stop on one of the days of last year’s Burger Week, which made it my 9th burger of the day. I remember walking in to the extremely packed restaurant, with my stomach full of meat, and surprised at how smoky it was in there from all the burgers being cooked (I’ve been told that this problem has now been fixed with a brand new ventilation system!). Growing weak from a day full of burgers, I sat down and was pleasantly surprised by the brie-packed burger that they served me, and the thoughts of how full I was quickly left my mind.

Well hold on to your buns, Halifax, because this year they have seriously upped their burger game! I’m a big fan of mushrooms on a burger, and there is no shortage of them here. The bacon is great (but really, when is it not?), and the copious amount of cheese encases the patty in that melted goodness that we all love. I’m not exactly sure what the “Fickleicious” secret sauce is composed of, but it gives some great flavouring to the burger that keeps you coming back for more. If this burger had been in last year’s Burger Week, it easily would have been a contender for one of my favourite burgers, so I’m fairly certain that it will be on quite a few Haligonians’ lists this year!
