Halifax Burger Week 2016 Preview – Part 4

The restaurants are prepping, people are making their lists, and the beer is being chilled. It is now only 2 sleeps until Halifax Burger Week, and the excitement is real! I have my burger schedule all ready to go, and while it doesn’t include every burger like last year, it is definitely filled with some delicious-sounding ones that I can’t wait to try. I’ve been lucky enough to already try a bunch of the burgers being offered this year, and you’ve read all about them in Parts 1-3. Now it’s time to give you 3 more options, all of which you’re probably going to want to add to your own lists.

Here’s what The Armview, Durty Nelly’s, and Indochine Banh Mi are going to being cooking up and serving to you this Burger Week!

The Armview

Burger: Molé Chicken Burger – Molé-coated, hand-pressed chicken patty with shaved lettuce, fresh jalapeno and corn pico de gallo & queso freso. Tortilla sealed on the grill with cilantro lime yogurt dipper (to help with the heat!)

Price: $13 with $1 going to Feed Nova Scotia

I’ve always been a sucker for a creative twist on a meal, especially when that meal includes a burger. Whether it be changing up the protein, the toppings, or even how the burger is presented, the options are endless! The Armview has recently become a place that I enjoy visiting due to the budget-friendly, yet still delicious, food, as well as the super friendly staff. I was really happy to see that they were participating in Burger Week again this year, and I was even more intrigued by the description of the burger they were offering.

I’ll admit that before I went to The Armview, that their description of the burger had me slightly confused. Although now after having seen the burger it makes a lot more sense, I wasn’t sure what they meant when they said “tortilla sealed on the grill”. When it was placed in front of me, I still was not totally sure what I was in for, as all I could see was this neat little tortilla package. However, after cutting into it, I got to see all the awesome colours and layers that this chicken burger was comprised of.

The molé-coated chicken was so juicy and it was bursting with great flavours that were both savoury and spicy. The fresh jalapeno and corn pico de gallo provided a huge hit of freshness, and they also contributed to that awesome heat you would expect from this burger. I loved the soft tortilla shell that wrapped all of the components together, and I was surprised that it was actually able to stand up against all the juices that were dripping from the various components. The cilantro lime yogurt dip was amazing, so much so that I was even dipping my fries in it, and it did help cut back the intensity of some of this burger’s heat. If you love creative, tasty burgers, make it a point to stop by The Armview and try this unique creation!

Durty Nelly’s

Burger: The Quarter Pound Classic – Withrow Farm’s local beef, fried onions and shrooms, cheddar cheese, pickles, garlic mayo and grainy mustard, on a sesame seed bun

Price: $8 with $1 going to Feed Nova Scotia

While unique and creative burgers are one of the aspects that makes Burger Week so great, there is also something to be said for those restaurants that can take a somewhat simple concept and turn it into a delicious burger. When reading the description of Durty Nelly’s burger, it sounded pretty straightforward but once I actually got to sit down and try it, I realized that there was some pretty great things happening between those buns.

The beef patty was juicy, flavourful, and an all around good time smothered in cheddar cheese. I loved the fried onions and shrooms, and they gave this burger a kind of diner-style feel, while still remaining classy. The garlic mayo gave a great underlying taste to the burger, but the real flavour came from the grainy mustard. The mustard gave this burger a strong punch, which in turn elevated this burger to a really great level. This take on a classic burger concept is definitely a must-try for all those participating in Burger Week!

Indochine Banh Mi

Burger: Banh Mi Burger – Vietnamese spiced local lean ground pork patty on a toasted crusty bun topped with cucumber, pickled sliced carrot and daikon, cilantro and house-made sriracha mayonnaise

Price: $6

I will admit that when I heard that Indochine was going to be taking part in Burger Week this year, I was pretty surprised. Known for serving up traditional Vietnamese food, I was unsure how they were going to incorporate their style into a burger that would draw people in. However, I’m glad to report that they actually came up with something that’s going to have people talking!

In lieu of a beef patty, they opted to go with one made from local lean ground pork. If you’re someone that is planning on eating lots of burgers this year, it’s these non-beef burgers that are going to save you. I’m obviously a huge supporter of red meat, but this weeklong event is about endurance, and there is nothing wrong with grabbing a lighter meat (or meatless) burger in between all the beef!

Accompanying the juicy pork patty is a combination of toppings that would normally be found in a banh mi dish. For veggies, you have carrots, daikon, and cucumbers, all of which give a crisp, crunchy texture to the burger. Drizzled over everything is a generous portion of sriracha, which make this a heat-lovers dream. I really enjoyed the toasted crusty bun that is used, as it is the perfect mix of both tough and soft. Overall, this burger comes together as a light and refreshing offering for the week. I appreciate all the veggies that are piled on top of the patty, as it makes you feel a little better about stuffing your face full of meat for a week. Indochine is definitely worth a visit come March 18th!
