Halifax Crime Stats Released For Second Quarter

Release:

As a follow-up to today's Board of Police Commissioners’ meeting, HRM Partners in Policing are releasing the 2011 second quarter crime statistics. Overall crime is down five per cent when comparing the first two quarters of 2011 to the same period in 2010.

Violent crime is up five per cent, including increases in homicides, attempt homicides, robberies and assaults. Property crime has fallen over nine per cent, with decreases in thefts, frauds, possession of stolen property and break and enters, and an increase in thefts of motor vehicles.

HRM Partners in Policing remain committed to our crime reduction strategy and continue to develop various strategies to address violent crime. Our emphasis is on firearms offences and the accompanying drug subculture, and we recently reorganized our resources to create a Firearms Enforcement Unit whose members are targeting the people responsible for gun crimes in our community.
