Halifax District RCMP responded to a collision where a nine-year-old girl ran into a moving car while sledding.

On Thursday, March 19th at approximately 6:30 p.m., RCMP and EHS attended the scene on Heddas Way where a car and a child on a sled had collided.

Preliminary investigation determined the child was sledding down a steep driveway when her sled entered the roadway and was struck by a slow moving vehicle. The driver was unable to manoeuver the car in time to avoid the collision. The child was examined at the scene by EHS and suffered minor injuries. No one in the vehicle was hurt. Charges are not anticipated.

The RCMP are reminding the public of the dangers of play near roadways. Cpl. Greg Church says, ‘Playing in or near streets in the best of weather conditions is dangerous enough but when you add extremely high snow banks, slippery roads and very poor driving conditions it becomes a recipe for disaster.’

Tips to keep in mind:

-Parents please keep children from playing in snow banks near the road. It can be enticing to build caverns and snow forts or slide down steep banks but it is extremely dangerous.

-Never sled on or near roadways. Look for shallow slopes that are free of trees, fences or any other obstacles.

– Avoid having children playing outside alone. Establish a buddy system with one or more friends and have them look out for one another.
