Happy New Year! Say Hello To 2012.

Happy New Year, Couchtime readers! I’d like to take this opportunity to be incredibly sappy and tell you all that I’ve really enjoyed spending the past year talking about TV with y’all. I love writing this blog and I love the fun little community of TV lovers that Couchtime has become. The blog keeps growing and I look forward to continuing to share opinions on all our favorite shows.

Speaking of which, there are a lot of new shows to be excited about this season so I thought I’d give you guys a glimpse at what’s in store. These are some shows I plan on reviewing, or at least checking out for a few episodes, and be sure to let me know if there are others you’re excited about.

Smash – NBC
Proving yet again that they have no idea how to understand demographics, NBC has marketed this show about a Broadway musical as debuting “the Monday after the Superbowl”. Um, what? C’mon, NBC. You must know who is interested in this show. Me, gay men, theater geeks. We are your demographic, and none of us know when the Superbowl is.

I had to Google it. It debuts February 6th. You’re welcome, NBC. Anyway, this is a TV show about the making of a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, and it’s got a fantastic cast including Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Katharine “Shoulda Beat Hicks” McPhee. It could end up being a train wreck, but I’m tentatively excited about it.

House of Lies – Showtime
This show I’m just flat out excited for. It stars Don Cheadle and two of my favorite people – Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars!) and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio!). Check out the trailer. I’m psyched.

Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23 – ABC
ABC hasn’t yet added this show to their midseason roster, and they better not be playing with me here because I’ve really been looking forward to it. Included in the cast are Krysten Ritter, who I love from Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls, and James Van Der Beek playing a fictionalized version of himself. Come on, you know you’re at least intrigued to see that.

Girls – HBO
Girls is in a similar vein with Apartment 23, 2 Broke Girls, New Girl and, well, you get it. It will be on HBO this Spring and has been described as Sex and the City but for poorer, younger, less awful women. So, basically me. It was created by and stars Lena Dunham (who is very funny on Twitter – if only I were funnier on Twitter, I’d have my own show) and is executive produced by Judd Apatow. Check out the trailer, I think you’ll immediately know if you’re interested or not.

Veep – HBO
I know almost nothing about this show, but it stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus so I’ll at least check it out. Watch the trailer and you’ll know why I don’t have more to say.

On top of all the new shows I’m excited about, there are also two returning shows that I’m anxiously awaiting. First and foremost, Mad Men. It has been far, far too long since Don Draper was in my life. I miss the sex appeal of Joan, the bitchfaces of Pete, and the wisecracks of Roger. They’ll all be back in March. I can’t wait. And then in April, Game of Thrones will return for a second season. It took me about half of season one to really get into that show, but I’m looking forward to its return.

And in the spirit of out with the old, in with the new, I’m dumping a few shows in 2012. I kissed 2 Broke Girls goodbye long ago, and I’ll now be adding Once Upon A Time and Ringer to that list. Neither show really captivated my attention every week, and with so many other great shows on TV they’re getting the boot.

Again, thanks for reading and I wish you all a happy and healthy 2012!
