Help Shape the Design of the Commemorative Halifax Explosion Emblem

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – What does the Halifax Explosion mean to you? The Halifax Regional Municipality wants its residents to help shape the design for an emblem to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this historic disaster.

Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, will mark a century since the Mont Blanc, a French cargo ship laden with explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel Imo in the Narrows of Halifax harbour. The two ships caught fire and caused a deadly explosion that decimated much of north-end Halifax, killing 2,000 people and injuring another 9,000.

The municipality is working with the Halifax Explosion 100th Anniversary Advisory Committee to plan a variety of initiatives to mark the upcoming milestone. As per a Regional Council motion from October 2015, the emblem will serve as a visual identity featured at special events, projects and on official communications leading up to the anniversary. It is meant to reflect the municipality’s commitment to the significance of this commemoration.

Residents are invited to fill out a short online survey about what the Halifax Explosion means to them. The survey will be available online at www.halifax.ca/halifaxexplosion until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2016.

To help shape what the emblem will look like, residents will be asked to comment on the following:

  • What words and feelings do you associate with the Halifax Explosion?
  • In one sentence, what should be top-of-mind for all of us when commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion?
  • Are there lessons from the local, national and international response to the Explosion that:
    • Are still meaningful today?
    • Have influenced the kind of community we’ve become?
