Highway 104 eastbound shut down as RCMP investigate collision, Masstown, N.S.

Colchester County District RCMP and Northern Traffic Services are at the scene of a single vehicle collision involving two horses on Highway 104. At approximately 5:45 a.m., Colchester County District RCMP, RCMP Northern Traffic Services, Nova Scotia Provincial Department of Transportation and Onslow Belmont Fire Department responded to a collision on Highway 104 near Masstown involving a single vehicle and two horses which were reported loose.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., Colchester County District RCMP, RCMP Northern Traffic Services, Nova Scotia Provincial Department of Transportation and Onslow Belmont Fire Department responded to a collision on Highway 104 near Masstown involving a single vehicle and two horses which were reported loose.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Mazda SUV traveling eastbound with two male occupants collided with two horses. The driver of the car who was trapped sustained serious injuries but with the quick actions of two traveling motorists was pulled from the wreckage while it was on fire. Seconds after he was removed the car exploded. Both horses are dead.

The driver and passenger were both transported to Colchester Regional Hospital for treatment.

RCMP Collision Re-constructionist has been called to assist in the investigation. Due to the ongoing investigation RCMP would like to advise the motoring public that Highway 104 eastbound between exits 11 and 12 will be closed for several hours and traffic will be re-routed to Highway 4.

RCMP are also asking for the individual who assisted in removing the injured person to contact Colchester County RCMP.
