Fire knocked down, crews to remain on scene overnight

(Saturday, Jan. 31) – Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency crews have knocked down a fire in a 68-unit apartment building on Arthur Street in the Woodside area.

Some crews began leaving the scene just after 4:30 however fire crews will remain at the site overnight to deal with hot spots. Residents of the Woodside area should be prepared for traffic delays and fire vehicles coming and going throughout the evening.

The Red Cross is working with residents to find temporary lodging and is also taking care of pets that were rescued from the building.

The fire, which began some time after 11 a.m., caused extensive damage to a number of units of the building. Cause is not known at this time and fire investigators will be brought in over the next 24 hours in an effort to begin to make that determination.
