Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 – In celebration of Waste Reduction Week 2011 (Oct. 17-23), HRM is encouraging all residents to dig out their unwanted items to prepare for its second annual Fall Curbside Give Away Weekend. The event is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 23.

By taking your unwanted but reusable items to the curb, they could become someone else’s treasure. Simply place a “FREE” sign on the items to ensure there is no confusion. Treasure hunters can remove items with a “FREE” sign but should remember to respect people’s property when participating.

Just remember, while this is a great way to help the environment by “reusing” whatever treasures are not retrieved by others, remaining items must be brought back in by dusk on Sunday, Oct. 23. You can also consider contacting non-profit organizations that take such items as part of their fundraising efforts so the items can be carted away.

Examples of “treasures” to set out for the Give Away include books, CDs and DVDs, furniture and small appliances, sports equipment, toys, tools, and construction materials.

To mark Waste Reduction Week, HRM is also hosting a Mobile Household Hazardous Waste event in Musquobodoit Harbour and information booths with prizes at the ferry terminals. For details visit halifax.ca/recycle.
