HRP Refers Fraud Matter to RCMP

Halifax Regional Police (HRP) has referred a fraud matter involving its Dedication to Duty Fund, which was co-managed by members of HRP and an outside person not employed by HRP, to the RCMP Federal Policing Financial Crime Section.

Over the last day, a number of factors have caused HRP to believe there was a misappropriation of funds from its Dedication to Duty Fund, an independent employee social account which is not comprised of taxpayers’ money. As a result, HRP filed an initial complaint with the Integrated HRP/RCMP Financial Crime Unit this afternoon. Due to the potential conflict of interest given that HRP is the complainant and employees have a vested interest in this matter, this file is being referred to the RCMP Federal Policing Financial Crime Section for investigation.

At this time, HRP does not believe that any HRP employees are involved in the possible misappropriation of monies from the Dedication to Duty Fund. In conjunction with the criminal investigation by the RCMP, a financial audit of the fund will be conducted. HRP will also tighten the financial controls of the fund.
