Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara: A Review

Having undergone rigorous testing under water for 5 hours, the entire MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Collection is water proof, sweat proof and melt-proof… and what better place to give it a proper run through than touring around New York City.

I figured that testing out this product in none other than NYC would really put this mascara to the test. With a full agenda planned from the crack of dawn to well into the midnight hour, and no hopes of slowing down: this mascara better bring it. Let’s see how it held up.
THE CLAIM:

Waterproof Hold – A combination of polymers with film-forming properties and a Synthetic Thermoplastic Resin work to coat lashes with a film, making them water and oil resistant.

Pigment – Creator and Artistic Director, Dany Sanz, searched to find the absolute darkest pigments to create the most dramatic, blackest formula around. Intensely black Natural Mineral Pigments made of Micronized Iron

Oxide coat the eyelash with an ultra high concentration of dark pigment. These tiny micro-particles are better able to fully coat each lash with more opaque color, and have better absorption of light for a strong intense black. The use of Natural Mineral Pigments makes it safe for sensitive eyes or contact wearers.

Volume, Length and Curl – A base of Wax Complex and Abyssinian Oil allows Aqua Smoky Extravagant to easily glide on and remain smudge-proof during wear, but also easily wash off when removal is desired. The

Duo of Polymers adheres and coats every single lash and provides maximum length. A unique Bio-Extender strengthens hair fiber and helps to extend the end of the lash.

Nourishment –Panthenol Pro-vitamin B5 restructures eyelashes by covering, nourishing and protecting them from environmental effects.

THE VERDICT:

Normally I don’t like to wear waterproof mascara because I find them too harsh for my eyes, and I have a difficult time getting it off and when I do I don’t like that my lashes typically come with it. I do, however like the idea of waterproof mascara especially in the summer when it gets really hot and humid, or when you spontaneously want to go to the beach to go swimming.
My lashes are blonde so without mascara I look like I don’t have any lashes at all making a waterproof mascara in the summer a must! Even when I’m not wearing full makeup (which I don’t in summer usually) I do like to wear a little bit of mascara. I went swimming with this mascara and then came home and took a shower and it was only when I was rubbing my eyes that it started to flake off.
What I liked about this mascara was the brush. I welcomed the thick chubby brush with the smaller thinner end for getting those pesky little corners and bottom lashes.
I also liked that it was actually waterproof and didn’t just flake off like others I’ve tried in the past. That being said you will need an oil based eye makeup remover to get this stuff off because when it goes on it goes on for good. I tried using a cream based makeup remover suggested for sensitive eyes, and it was no good. I found it was scratchy and abrasive on my eyes which is exactly the opposite of what you want for the soft tissues around your eyes.
I would say that this mascara scores higher on the defining scale than the voluminous one. The brush does well to coat each lash individually, but there isn’t a lot of bulk even with multiple coats at least not like I’m used to. But when you’re applying a waterproof mascara you’re probably opting for a lighter cleaner look anyway, so I’m okay with this.
Overall I’d say that I liked this mascara and I would definitely give it a buy if you’re looking for a waterproof mascara or something even to apply over your regular mascara during hot humid weather. Just make sure to get a good makeup remover for when you want to take it off because this bad boy holds on tight. I love this one from Biotherm is super gentle, but definitely does the trick.
The Aqua Smoky Extravagant Mascara from Make Up Forever retails for $28.00, and is available at MAKE UP FOR EVER Boutiques (since June 2014) and will come to Sephora stores across Canada (August 2014).
