On May 8, Colchester District RCMP with the assistance of Colchester and Pictou District General Investigation Section (GIS) arrested a Pictou County man and searched a home after receiving a complaint that someone was distributing expilcit images to a child through social media. Investigators were provided assistance from the Nova Scotia RCMP Provincial Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit.
Devon Lee Stewart, 23, of Scotsburn, Pictou County has been charged with:
- Failure to comply with condition of Recognizance x 2
- Make sexually explicit material available to a child x 2
- Luring a child
Stewart was held in custody and appeared in Truro Provincial Court on May 8. He was remanded and is scheduled to return to court on May 13.
In Nova Scotia it is mandatory for citizens to report suspected child pornography. This means that anyone who encounters child pornography material or recordings must report it to the police. Failing to report suspicious activity and materials could result in penalties similar to failure to report child abuse set out in the Child and Family Services Act. The RCMP encourages citizens to be a voice for children who are victims of sexual exploitation by reporting any suspected offences to your local police or by using Canada’s National tipline for reporting online sexual exploitation of children at www.cybertip.ca.
