Man and Police Officer duke it out in the middle of Bedford Highway

Motorists last night in Bedford got a bit of a shock as a Halifax Police Officer and a man in custody fought in the street yesterday.

From HRPD:

Police are Investigating an Assault on One of their Officers

At approximately 615 PM police arrested a 31 year old male for shoplifting,  possession of illegal  drugs and outstanding warrants. En-route to the police station the male appeared to have  swallowed an unknown substance. The officer pulled the police car to a vacant lot to check the status of the male. The male forced his way out of the police car by striking the officer in the head with a blunt object. The officer attempted to gain control of the male who was attempting to escape. In the struggle both the officer and suspect ended up on the Bedford Highway facing oncoming traffic. The suspect was controlled  and handcuffed by the officer. Both the suspect and the police officer suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The injuries are believed to be  non-life threatening.
