On July 5th, 2020 at approximately 4:50 a.m. Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of two people acting suspiciously in the 100 block of Trinity Avenue, Dartmouth. When police arrived they noted a man who ran to a nearby truck when he saw Police he fled the area at a dangerously high rate of speed.
Other officers responding to the area attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle using their emergency equipment but the driver refused to pull over.
Police followed the vehicle to the end of Trinity Avenue which is a cul-de sac. The driver then turned and accelerated toward one of the police vehicles. The officer had to maneuver quickly to avoid being struck.
The driver fled in the vehicle, the vehicle was located minutes later by police abandoned on Jackson Road, Dartmouth. A Halifax Regional Police K-9 handler and his dog tracked, located and arrested the suspect, who was hiding in the bushes a short distance away from the vehicle on Jackson Road.
Police learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Chezzetcook.
53-year-old Michael Ralph Crowell of Head of Chezzetcook has been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon contrary to section 267 (a) of the Criminal Code; operating a conveyance in a manner that having regard to all circumstances, was dangerous to the public, contrary to section 320.13 (1) of the Criminal Code; Operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer and failed to stop the motor vehicle as soon as was reasonable in the circumstances contrary to 320.17 of the Criminal Code.
The investigation continues into the possession of the stolen truck and charges may be laid at a later date.
The accused has been remanded into custody, he will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.
