Man charged after robbing hotel, Sobeys store

Police have charged a man in relation to two robberies that occurred this year in Halifax.

On February 5 at approximately 8:35 a.m. police responded to a robbery at the Hotel Halifax at 1990 Barrington Street. A man with what was believed to be a firearm came into the hotel lobby, demanded money from the reception staff and then fled on foot with an amount of cash. Officers arrested the man after a short foot pursuit and seized a replica firearm.

The man is also facing charges in relation to a robbery that occurred on January 4 at approximately 6:25 p.m. at the Sobeys at 2651 Windsor Street in Halifax. The man entered the store, stole merchandise and threatened store employees with a weapon before fleeing the area.

Mitchell Donald Heighton, 29, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of:

  • Robbery (x2)
  • Possession of weapons for dangerous purpose (x2)
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Resist arrest
  • Wearing a disguise with intent
  • Breach of probation (x4)
