Members of the Sexual Assault Investigative Team of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged a Dartmouth man in relation to sexual assault that occurred just over 17 years ago.
At 12:27 p.m. on March 26, 2018 police received a sexual assault complaint related to incidents that occurred sometime between September 1, 2000 and June 30, 2001. The victim was 10 and 11 years old at the time. The suspect and victim were known to each other.
Investigators have charged 64-year-old Marcel C. Maessen of Dartmouth with one count each of sexual interference and sexual assault. Maessen is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on June 5, 2018.
Sexual assault investigations are very complex. As part of our victim-centered, trauma-informed approach to sexualized violence, we work closely with victims to ensure they’re willing to proceed with a police investigation, which includes giving a statement about the incident. Police must also ensure the victim’s privacy is upheld and well-being is fully considered.
