Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Ramona Jennex was upset about an alleged incident at Bedford South School in Bedford.

Halifax Regional School Board notified the department today, May 21, about an allegation that a child-care staff member taped shut the mouth of a child during the Excel after school program on May 16, the last day of school before the long weekend.

“As the Minister of Education, a former teacher and a grandparent, I am very upset about this alleged incident,” Ms. Jennex. “I want to reassure parents that this behaviour is not acceptable nor will it be tolerated. I have asked the board to keep me informed as to the progress of the investigation and its outcome.”

The employee is off work while the board completes its investigation. Halifax Regional Police are also investigating.

“Our schools need to be safe havens for children in this province,” said Ms. Jennex. “I expect the school board to have answers about this alleged incident shortly and we will work with the board to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
