The Halifax Regional Police Traffic Unit and Patrol Officers are focusing on motorcycle safety awareness during the month of May in their continued effort to enhance road safety and educate citizens on the rules of the road.

With the weather anticipated to warm up, motorcyclists will be hitting the roads for another season. Police remind all motorcycle enthusiasts to ensure their bikes are in good working order, adhere to the rules of the road and always wear a helmet. Failing to wear adequate protective headgear on a motorcycle carries a fine of $237.50 for a first offence and increases for subsequent offences. Police ask that all drivers drive safely and look out for each other.

As part of the annual Motorcycle riding season, Safety Services Nova Scotia is planning a May Motorcycle Awareness event alongside the Halifax Regional Police Traffic Unit. The event will held Wednesday, May 18, 5 – 7 p.m., 201 Brownlow Avenue, Dartmouth, and is focusing on improving driver awareness of increased motorcycle traffic on Nova Scotia roads at this time of year. 

The Halifax Regional Police Traffic Unit will be onsite giving safety demonstrations. As well, there will be a BBQ, prizes, motorcycle dealers, exhibitors and networking opportunities. Designating May as Motorcycle Awareness Month is meant to help all drivers realize the importance of being more alert at this time of year.

In April, the focus was on speeding enforcement and aggressive driving and officers issued 1878 tickets during the month for a variety of Motor Vehicle Act violations.
