Municipal Offices, Recreation Facilities Closed Tuesday Morning Due to Storm

Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Due to the severe weather expected to continue into tomorrow morning, municipal offices, customer service centres and many recreation facilities will be closed until at least noon on Tuesday, Feb. 9. There continues to be a blizzard warning in effect for much of Nova Scotia. Snow is falling heavily in the Halifax region right now and is expected to continue through the morning commute. Current forecasts are predicting between 30 and 40 centimetres of snow with high winds causing white-out conditions. This blowing snow is causing challenges for clearing crews. In many areas streets and sidewalks are being filled back in as they are plowed. The high winds are expected to continue on Tuesday, which will likely cause problems for anyone out travelling in the morning. Safety is the municipality’s top priority. Delaying opening will facilitate clearing efforts and ensure a safer commute for our employees and residents. Staff will reassess the weather and road conditions at 10:30 a.m. to determine whether it will be possible to open the offices later in the day. Many recreation centres in the Halifax region closed early today due to the weather. Recreation staff will also reassess at 10:30 a.m. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility on Tuesday afternoon for further updates on closures and cancellations. Contact information for municipally operated facilities is online at http://www.halifax.ca/rec/reccentres.php. Some Halifax Transit buses are currently operating on snow plans. Updates on individual bus routes are available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at http://www.halifax.ca/transit. Conventional bus and ferry service is expected to operate on regular schedules Tuesday morning. Access-A-Bus service will also be available; clients are encouraged to monitor the weather conditions and adjust their travel accordingly.    Residents are reminded that curbside collection of garbage, organics and recyclables is cancelled for Tuesday. Those who normally have collection will be permitted to put out twice the normal bag limit on their next scheduled collection day in two weeks’ time. We cannot reschedule Tuesday pickup this weekend as the holiday collection for Heritage Day (Monday, Feb. 15) is already scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. The overnight winter parking ban will be enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, and we expect it will be needed on Wednesday as well. Residents are reminded that under Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles can be ticketed and/or towed any time they’re interfering with snow clearing. The municipality thanks residents for their patience and cooperation. For regular storm updates and more information on snow clearing, visit www.halifax.ca/snow. Source: Release
