Sunday, March 20, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax region is expecting a mix of precipitation starting early Monday, which could make for a challenging commute tomorrow morning. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather forecasts over the next 24 hours and adjust their travel accordingly.
Right now forecasts are calling for a mix of snow, freezing rain and ice pellets beginning during the morning rush hour and continuing throughout the day. Accumulations could reach up to 10 centimetres. Any change in the track of this weather system will have an impact on the type and amount of precipitation this area may receive.
Crews are out today applying brine and salt on the streets and sidewalks, and will continue with this work until the precipitation starts to accumulate tomorrow. All municipal equipment is on standby for when the bad weather begins.
Halifax Transit staff will be assessing the weather and road conditions overnight and tomorrow. Updates on individual bus routes will be available by following @hfxtransit on Twitter, which is also streamed online at http://www.halifax.ca/transit.
Municipal recreation programs and services may be affected on Monday morning. Residents are asked to contact their respective facility tomorrow for further updates on delays, closures and cancellations.
Garbage, recyclables and organics collection will go ahead as scheduled on Monday. Residents who regularly have collection that day are asked to move their waste out of the path of snow-clearing equipment, if possible.
Any service interruptions will be communicated via a Public Service Announcement, the municipal government website and alerts through the What Goes Where app. Download the app now at http://www.halifax.ca/whatgoeswhere/index.php.
Due to the timing of the forecast precipitation, the overnight parking ban will not be enforced tonight. If possible, residents should not park on the street tomorrow, as Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act enables ticketing or towing any time a vehicle obstructs snow clearing operations.
