Neighbours unite to paint design on Chebucto Lane

Wednesday, July 10, 2013 (Halifax NS) – On Saturday, July 13, at 12 p.m.

, neighbours will come together to transform Chebucto Lane (between Duncan and Lawrence streets) by painting a large community-created design on the street. The design was created by the neighbourhood and reflects the story of the community.

In order to accommodate this event, Chebucto Lane between Chebucto Road and Lawrence Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Citizens are invited to attend this event as neighbours join together to paint the street. A rain date for this event is scheduled for Sunday, July 14.

This project is financially supported through the 4Cs Foundation, and made possible through HRM’s new Placemaking Program, which encourages communities to apply to paint their neighbourhood street intersections. Communities work collaboratively with HRM and artists to design their project and host a painting event. The program provides neighbourhoods with the opportunity to organize and propose community art projects on city property that activate shared public spaces, give a sense of place and build community spirit. This program was inspired by Portland, Oregon’s City Repair model (www.cityrepair.org).

Is your neighbourhood interested in placemaking? For more information and applications for the 2014 Placemaking Program, visit www.facebook.com/PlaceMakingHFX or www.halifax.ca/culture/CommunityArts/Placemaking.html. Deadline for 2014 applications is October 31, 2013.
