Residents in the Municipality of the District of Chester and surrounding area, including Martin’s River, Blandford Peninsula and New Ross, will have better access to primary health-care services with a new, modern health clinic planned for the community.
Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse, on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister David Wilson, announced today, Aug. 21, the province is providing $500,000 towards the building, which is being supported by South Shore Health Authority. The project is led by Our Health Centre Association, a community organization spearheading the effort.
“This new clinic will encourage collaborative practices and patient-centred health care, and will help attract new physicians to the region,” said Ms. Peterson-Rafuse. “This investment helps fulfill government’s commitment to provide better health care for Nova Scotians and their families.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of the many community members who have put much time and effort into this project.”
Daniel Green, chair of the Our Health Centre Association, said they were excited to learn of the $500,000 investment by the province, which will invigorate their fundraising efforts.
“In addition to delivering health care services, this new clinic will enhance health care in our area now by focusing on community-based programs and services,” said Mr. Green.
The proposed centre will be a 12,500 square foot complex of new and existing space.
“We applaud the community’s initiative in creating a health centre to improve access to care, enhance service delivery, and strengthen health promotion activities in the Chester area,” said Janet Simm, vice-president of health services, South Shore Health. “The health centre will play an important role as part of South Shore Health’s network of primary care services.
“The province’s support for this project demonstrates a commitment to enhancing service delivery at the community level.”
The facility will include six family doctors’ offices with connecting exam rooms, reception and information centres, administration offices, South Shore Health Authority offices for mental health and addiction, a diabetic clinic and other services, blood collection, office space for visiting, and consulting professionals waiting rooms and volunteer support areas.
It is expected the clinic will open in the next two years.
