New Convention Centre to Host 2018 International STEM Festival

More than 1,450 of the world’s experts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM disciplines, will meet in the new Halifax Convention Centre in 2018 for STEMfest, an international conference festival.

Trade Centre Limited (TCL), today, Jan. 23, announced the two-week event, which is expected to attract representatives from up to 20 countries.

“Nova Scotia is home to some of the world’s leading academic research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said David Goncalves, executive director of STEM States Incorporated, the organization that manages STEMfest. “We’re excited that our delegates will have the opportunity to experience all that Halifax has to offer, particularly the new state-of-the-art convention centre. It’s a natural fit for our conference.”

STEMcon, the core conference of the festival, will bring 500 delegates together to discuss policy, education, industry and academia.

Three additional conferences have been secured as part of the STEM festival:
–World Conference on Safety in Science, Industry and Education,
400 delegates
–International Conference on Power Control and Optimisation, 250 delegates
–Lean Engineering and Production Conference, 300 delegates

“The fact that an international event of this calibre has chosen the new Halifax Convention Centre is a significant win for our province,” said Scott Ferguson, president and CEO of TCL. “This is an incredible opportunity to highlight our local universities, researchers and businesses and connect them with experts in their field from around the world.”

“As Atlantic Canada’s leading research university, Dalhousie University offers a range of courses and programs in the STEM disciplines,” said Martha Crago, vice-president of research at Dalhousie University. “This is an significant opportunity for our students, faculty and researchers, and we look forward to welcoming the attendees of STEMfest in 2018 and being a part of this exciting event.”

Acadia University president Ray Ivany said events like STEMfest provide Nova Scotia the opportunity to showcase its leading edge academic institutions and research facilities to the world.

“This is great news for Nova Scotia and we are excited to welcome STEMfest in 2018,” said Mr. Ivany.

Additional events are expected to be added to STEMfest leading up to 2018. The first STEMfest was held in Malaysia in 2013, attracting a total of six events and 4,200 delegates.

The Halifax Convention Centre will feature 120,000 square feet of rentable space within the Nova Centre, a one million square foot mixed used development including a hotel, financial tower and retail space. The funding of the new convention centre is shared between three levels of government. The province and HRM will each contribute about $56 million toward capital construction costs and the federal government has committed $51 million to eligible construction costs.
