New Heritage Project Announced for Town of Yarmouth

The Town of Yarmouth will develop Heritage in Your Hand, a self-guided activity app to promote the community’s culture and heritage.

The new app is being developed for use in the upcoming tourist season and will guide visitors to sites in the area, including The Town of Yarmouth Heritage District, Waterfront Trail, museums, archives and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Western Branch.

“For many visitors, Yarmouth is the gateway to the province, and the app will help them find attractions to learn about the area,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. “The people of Yarmouth and the Acadian Shore are known for their warm hospitality, and I know they are thrilled with every opportunity to share their heritage with guests.”

The app will be promoted at partner sites and be free to download. Once a user downloads the app, they can choose the activities they want to pursue. An interactive map will direct users in a specific route and each point of interest along an activity itinerary will include additional information about the location, including audio clips and images.

“Heritage in Your Hand is a unique blend of history and technology which allows us to feature our rich architectural inheritance,” said Esther Dares, a member of the committee developing the app. “We are fortunate to have engaged partners who recognize this exciting opportunity to bring the past to life for visitors of our community.”

The Town of Yarmouth is partnering with the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism Association and the Waterfront Development Corporation to develop the app. Government invested $35,190 in the project.
