New Years Eve festivities taking place at the Oval this year

Halifax Regional Municipality is extending an open invitation to its residents for the annual live New Year’s Eve celebration. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 31, and will be held at the Emera Oval in Halifax Commons, marking the first occasion that the municipal New Year’s Eve concert and national broadcast are hosted at this venue.

The festivities will kick off at 11 p.m., featuring Music Nova Scotia 2023 Entertainer of the Year, Rankin MacInnis, as the headliner on the main stage. MacInnis, a talented multi-instrumentalist, will showcase a variety of artists, highlighting the reasons his Winter Warmers Showcase garnered the Best Live Sector Event award.

The evening will also spotlight other musical performances, including Lindsay Misiner and a tribute to 50 Years of Hip Hop by DJs Okay TK and Grimrock. They will be joined by breakdancers, emcees, and others. The night will wrap up with a grand fireworks display and a DJ set.

In addition to the music and fireworks, there will be a family-friendly skating session from 10 p.m. to midnight at the Emera Oval. Free skate and helmet rentals will be available, as well as select adaptive equipment, with a valid ID required for all rentals. For families with young children, there will be an earlier skate from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., complete with a countdown and a fireworks show at 9 p.m.
