A Nova Scotia business is aiming to revolutionize the film industry with new technology that makes it easier to capture exceptional images.

Cinema Control Laboratories has developed the Andra Motion Focus System, which is the world’s first fully automated focus system for digital single lens reflex and high-end cinema cameras.

The company launched the system today, April 7, at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas.

“This is an exciting product that has the potential to enhance the film-making process,” said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson. “Nova Scotia businesses are some of the most innovative in the world, and when a great opportunity like this comes forward, the province is ready to help turn ideas into reality.”

The system helps cinematographers simplify the difficult task of adjusting focus on the fly. The result is a consistent, sharp focus with a much higher degree of accuracy than manual-focus cameras.

Through the Small Business Development Program, the government is reimbursing $14,950 of Cinema Control’s $29,900 investment to identify and analyze potential markets.

“The province’s investment was crucial because it gave us access to the expertise we needed to expand,” said Cinema Control president and CEO Julian Taylor. “By working with specialized consultants, we were able to focus on precise target markets. Today we are receiving substantial interest from industry leaders in most regions of the world, and that’s amazing for such a short period of time.”
