Nova Scotians to Pay Less for More Common Generic Drugs

Thousands of Nova Scotians, including seniors, now pay significantly less for four more common generic drugs.

Nova Scotia worked with other Canadian provinces and territories to lower the cost of the following to 18 per cent of the brand-name equivalent:
— Citalopram: used to treat depression
— Pantoprazole: used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal conditions
— Rosuvastatin: used to treat high cholesterol
— Simvastatin: used to treat high cholesterol

The prices took effect April 1.

“Nova Scotians need affordable access to the drugs that help keep them healthy,” said Leo Glavine, Minister of Health and Wellness. “The pan-Canadian pricing initiative is a valuable tool to help achieve affordable drugs not only for Nova Scotia, but across the country

A senior on Pharmacare taking 40mg of Simvastatin would have paid $28.68 in co-payments for a 90-day supply. Now the co-payment is up to $16.51 for the drug. Anyone paying the full amount would have paid $95.58, and now will pay $55.04.
