A Nova Scotia RCMP officer took home top honours last night during the Atlantic Women in Law Enforcement (AWLE) conference in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Cpl. Charla Keddy of the Halifax RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit was awarded the AWLE Officer of the Year Award.
To receive this award, a female officer must have a history of excellence in leadership, community service, mentoring and performance.
‘I am truly honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award,’ said Cpl. Keddy. ‘I’m lucky enough to go to work everyday knowing I get to help make communities safer. To be recognized for that work is pleasant surprise.’
Cpl. Keddy has been an RCMP Officer since 2001, spending time as a general duty officer in Barrington, Nova Scotia before transferring to the Halifax Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit in 2007. Since that time, Cpl. Keddy has exceled in a variety of roles and has participated in number of complex, high profile investigations throughout Canada. During her 13 years of service, Cpl. Keddy has also been active in the community in coaching and mentoring roles. Today, Cpl. Keddy leads a team responsible for investigations in a variety of areas such as marijuana grows, synthetic and street level drugs, cigarette trafficking and the sale of counterfeit items as well as targeting organized crime.
The AWLE conference is held annually throughout the Atlantic Provinces. This year approximately 70 candidates attended the three day even from October 7th to 10th which included guest speakers on a variety of police-related topics.
