Officer Involved Shooting – Update

Police are continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened earlier this morning in Dartmouth.

At approximately 1:10 a.m., Halifax Regional Police officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 200 block of Pleasant Street as part of an on-going investigation. Officers approached the vehicle and were confronted by a male suspect with a firearm, after which officers fired upon him. While it is early in the investigation, it is believed that one officer discharged a firearm while another deployed a non-lethal weapon. No one was injured during the incident. A total of five suspects, four men and one woman, were arrested in relation to this incident and remain in police custody for questioning.

The suspect vehicle was seized for processing by officers in the Forensic Identification Section and a firearm was subsequently located inside. Further, investigators executed a search warrant at a business in the same block as the incident.

The HRP/RCMP Integrated General Investigation Section is conducting the investigation into the weapons offences involving the suspects. Halifax Regional Police contacted the Serious Incident Response Team in relation to the officer-involved shooting, and they advised that they would not assume responsibility for this investigation. As a result, Cape Breton Regional Police Service will oversee a review into the officer-involved shooting.
