What is Open City you ask, Open City is a collaboration of local business getting together for one day and doing something special all at once for residents of Halifax.

145 businesses on the peninsula and Downtown Dartmouth have already signed up. The idea is to show the people that live here what great things there are to offer and in turn then be ambassadors to visitors and guest to the city and tell them what great unique business we have here to offer.

Businesses and ideas have launched through previous Open City’s, Ace Burger first started selling burgers out of Gus’s kitchen during Open City, Made with Local launched their delicious bars and Chef Dennis Johnston started the tradition of back door Pad Thai from Open City, Chef D may have closed Fid and slowed down life a bit but he is back serving Pad Thai from the Brewery Market Saturday mornings. This year Halifax press Grilled Cheese truck will be serving for the very first time at Bishops Landing

Local favourite Biscuit will be offering discounts if you take a picture of an item and post it to social media, but they will also be offering a braiding station and teaming up with Sailor Bups to offer sidewalk beard, Stache and neck trims. The collaborations don’t end there Cyclesmith will have Cheese Gypsy in the parking lot, buy something at Atlantic News and get a discount at Old School Donuts parked outside.

The highlight of the event for many is the Backdoor takeouts – From Donair Steam buns at Field Guide, Breakfast Calzones at Salvatores, Coffee deals at favourites Uncommon Grounds, Smiling Goat and Java Blend, $2 hand paddled ice cream at Sugah!, General Tso Octopus at EDNA, to $1 oysters on the waterfront at the Shack and so so much more.

Saturday also marks the first day that memberships will be available for The Carrot co-op grocery story on Gottingen.
