Nova Scotia Power crews have safely restored electricity for more than 70 per cent of customers who lost power overnight due to a storm that brought high winds and rain throughout the province.
Restoration efforts continue this morning, as crews work to restore power for customers remaining without power.
“Overnight winds exceeded 80 km/h in most areas of the province and reached 108 km/h near the Halifax airport,” said NS Power Storm Lead,
Sean Borden. “Most power outages were caused by the high wind gusts
blowing trees and tree branches onto power lines and damaging equipment.”
The company aims to have power restored for all customers impacted by the storm by late Friday afternoon.
“The weather in general is becoming more severe, but we were well prepared for the storm with over 300 people
positioned and ready to respond as needed throughout the province,” Borden said. “Our overnight crews worked diligently and safely to restore power to as many customers as possible so that they would have power when they woke up this morning to get ready for work and school.”
The company has power line technicians, tree crews, and other frontline workers restoring power for customers,
plus many more dedicated people working behind the scenes to serve customers.
The largest outage crews are working on involves 9,000 customers in communities including Timberlea, Lakeside,
Beechville, Bayer’s Lake and Clayton Pak. They lost power when a vehicle snagged overhead lines on Lakeside Park
Drive and pulled them off the poles. Crews had to disconnect power in order to safely perform repairs and restore
service to customers.
Borden said it’s “all hands on deck” and the company will not rest until all customers have their power restored.
Customers can report outages via the company’s online outage map at outagemap.nspower.ca, which also has
the most up-to-date information on outages and estimated restoration times. Customers can also call 1-877-428-
6004 to report outages and any damage to electrical equipment they may see.
